Step 2
Understand & Plan for the Unique Oxbridge Admissions Process
Before diving into your application, it’s essential to understand what makes Oxbridge different from every other UK university application.
UCAS rules prohibit applying to both Oxford and Cambridge in the same cycle (with very limited exceptions for organ scholars). Choosing the right university for you – and the right college and course – is a critical first decision your Fortuna coach will help you navigate.
Oxbridge applications through UCAS must be submitted by mid-October, nearly three months before the standard January deadline. This gives students significantly less time in their final year to prepare materials. We’ll work with you to build a timeline that keeps you on track.
Applicants apply to a specific college within the university – or make an open application. Each college has its own character and largely determines who teaches you, where you live, and the experiences you’ll have. College choice can also impact your chances of admission. Your coach will help you make an informed choice.
Oxford and Cambridge teach through intensive one-on-one or small group tutorials (Oxford) or supervisions (Cambridge). This means they’re specifically selecting for students who can thrive in intellectually demanding, discussion-based settings, and every part of the selection process reflects that.
Step 3
Develop Your Academic Profile and Subject Passion
Oxbridge selects for students with genuine, deep passion for their subject, not just strong grades. Your coach will help you:
- Develop a clear, authentic narrative that shows focused commitment to your field
- Demonstrate engagement beyond your high school syllabus through reading, research, or independent projects
- Build the intellectual curiosity, supercurricular background, and academic maturity that Oxbridge is looking for
Step 4
Prepare for Admissions Tests
Most Oxbridge courses require subject-specific admissions tests, such as the LNAT (Law), TMUA (Mathematics), TARA (Thinking Skills), and others, often taken in November before interviews. These are used to shortlist candidates and most other UK universities don’t require them.
Your Fortuna coach will advise on which tests apply to your course and how to approach preparation strategically.

Build and Submit a Compelling Application

Step 6
Master the Oxbridge Interview
Unlike most universities, Oxbridge interviews a large proportion of shortlisted applicants, typically in December. These aren’t standard HR-style interviews, but rather they’re academic tutorial simulations designed to assess how you think through unfamiliar problems in real time. Interviewers may present you with a problem you’ve never seen and observe how you reason.
Your coach will prepare you to perform at your best:
- Targeted mock Oxbridge interview preparation sessions that replicate the tutorial format
