Michael Malone brings over two decades of experience helping students navigate every stage of the MBA journey – from prospective applicant to thriving alum. A former Associate Dean at Columbia Business School, he oversaw Admissions, Financial Aid, and Student Affairs for all graduate business programs. Earlier in his Columbia tenure, he led the MBA Career Education and Advising team, and later served as Managing Director at Kellogg’s Career Management Center, where he supported full-time, part-time, and executive MBA candidates along with alumni.
Throughout his career, Michael has been driven by a belief in the power of storytelling, self-reflection, and access to opportunity. He brings sharp insight and thoughtful encouragement to every interaction, helping Fortuna clients find their voice, refine their narrative, and connect the dots between where they are and where they want to go.
A native New Yorker who has also lived in Philadelphia, DC, Berkeley, and Chicago, Michael’s six-word memoir is “Helping people’s light bulbs go on.” Outside of work, he’s a proud gym regular, middling 5K runner, NY sports fan, and Bruce Springsteen enthusiast. He loves deep conversations about politics, philosophy, and track & field with his two teenage sons – and credits his wife, who leads education programs in prisons, as the real changemaker in the family.

Q&A with Michael
What’s your coaching superpower?
Providing straightforward, encouraging and actionable feedback is something I strive for in every coaching encounter. Having worked in a variety of student-facing roles at a range of institutions, my experience enables me to field an array of questions and to help clients connect the dots between where they are and where they’re seeking to go.
What’s your top piece of advice for admissions candidates?
Candidates often initially focus on what characteristics schools are seeking and then try to meet those standards. I’d recommend instead focusing on self-reflection and assessment first. While this can feel intimidating, knowing your personal mission will guide your decision-making and application process in a more substantial and fulfilling way.
