Why the Wharton Group Interview Is Different
Wharton’s Team-Based Discussion (TBD) is a 35-minute virtual group exercise in which you collaborate with 5–6 fellow MBA applicants to address a real-world business prompt. The group must work together to develop a solution and achieve a tangible outcome—while being observed by two members of the Wharton admissions team. It’s followed by a 10-minute one-on-one interview.
This format reflects the collaborative, discussion-driven learning style at Wharton. It’s a test of how you engage, listen, contribute, and lead under pressure—and a rare opportunity to experience the Wharton culture before you even step on campus.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Wharton group interview—officially called the Wharton Team-Based Discussion (TBD)—is a unique component of the Wharton MBA interview process. It’s a 35-minute virtual session where 5–6 applicants work together on a real-world business prompt. The format is designed to reflect Wharton’s highly collaborative culture and assess how candidates engage in a team setting. Wharton adcom observers assess your communication style, level of engagement, leadership ability, and decision-making approach during the discussion.
The Wharton Team-Based Discussion interview is intended to model the collaborative learning environment that defines the Wharton MBA program. It allows the Wharton adcom to evaluate soft skills that are harder to assess through written materials alone—such as how you listen, contribute ideas, navigate team dynamics, and work toward a shared outcome. Wharton believes these skills are essential for success in its program and beyond.
Immediately following the group exercise, you’ll participate in a 10-minute one-on-one interview with a member of the Wharton admissions team. This brief personal interview gives you an opportunity to reflect on your performance in the Team-Based Discussion and share additional insights about your goals, values, and fit with Wharton. It’s an important part of the overall assessment, so preparing for both the group and individual portions is essential. We’ll help you anticipate common Wharton MBA interview questions as part of our coaching.
Effective Wharton group interview prep should include practicing the TBD format with real applicants, receiving personalized feedback, and reflecting on your own strengths and communication style. It’s important to think about past experiences where you’ve worked in teams, adapted to new dynamics, or helped move a group forward. At Fortuna, we simulate the group interview experience through our Wharton TBD mock sessions so you can feel confident and prepared on the day of your actual Wharton MBA interview.
You will receive the Wharton TBD prompt at the time you are invited to interview. You should prepare a one-minute pitch as your contribution to the group discussion. While you don’t need to memorize your pitch word-for-word, you should be clear on your key message and able to deliver it naturally. During our Wharton group interview prep, we help you refine your pitch so that it feels compelling, strategic, and aligned with your application.
Wharton is evaluating your ability to collaborate effectively, communicate clearly, adapt to group dynamics, and demonstrate leadership when appropriate. They’re not looking for the loudest voice or someone who dominates the conversation. Instead, they value candidates who show strong interpersonal awareness, make space for others, and help the group reach a thoughtful outcome.
Yes—absolutely. The most successful candidates in the Wharton group interview are those who contribute meaningfully while demonstrating emotional intelligence and teamwork. You can stand out by helping guide the discussion, building on others’ ideas, managing time wisely, and moving the team toward a clear, actionable solution. Our Wharton TBD mock prep helps you find that balance.
Our prep includes a live simulation of the Wharton Team-Based Discussion interview with real applicants, followed by detailed, individualized feedback from experienced coaches.
