In Brief: The 2026-27 Kellogg’s MBA application requires one two-part essay (550 words total), one optional essay, and a video component of five questions. But beyond polished writing, the strongest responses introduce you: they trace the experiences that shaped your career goals, showcase your clear understanding of why an MBA is the right fit for you at this moment, and show how your values influence your leadership and contributions.
Applying to Kellogg means showing up with intention. The school attracts high-achieving candidates from around the world, and Kellogg seeks applicants who are both self-aware and purpose-driven. That means that every element of the application is your opportunity to convey not just what you’ve done, but who you are, what motivates you, and how you’ll contribute.
To succeed, your MBA application essays will demand a cohesive, personal story that aligns your goals, values, and experiences with what Kellogg is all about. In this article, I’ll share how to unpack approaching each element of the Kellogg MBA application with clarity, strategy, and authenticity. Every tip is drawn both from my experience coaching applicants at Fortuna, and from my years working in the Kellogg MBA admissions office:
How to Answer Kellogg’s MBA Application Essay
Kellogg’s required MBA application essay comes in a two-part prompt, with a 550 word limit (hard cutoff at 575 words):
Part I: An MBA is a significant investment of time, energy and resources, and the decision to pursue one deserves serious reflection. Tell us about the pivotal experiences and decisions that have brought you to this moment in your career, how they have shaped your ambitions, and why now is the right time to take this next step.
Part II: Now turn the lens outward: beyond what you hope to gain, what do you hope to contribute to the students who will learn alongside you?
A strong Kellogg MBA application essay starts with recognizing that this prompt is a thoughtful twist on the classic “Why an MBA? Why now? Why this school?” question. But then it goes one step farther, and asks you to consider, “What do I want to do with a Kellogg MBA?” A successful essay will link your past and your present with your future.
Part 1: Share Your Origin Story
In Part I, Kellogg is asking you to identify the moments that genuinely shifted something for you: the decisions that clarified your direction, the experiences that revealed a gap in your skills, the challenges that tested you. The Admissions Committee is inviting you to showcase your thoughtful reflection on the personal perspectives and turning points that have shaped your path and led you to pursue an MBA at Kellogg.
Share Specifics
For instance, don’t just say you want to become an investment banking associate focused on M&A. Explain what sparked that interest. Perhaps you worked at a startup that struggled to raise capital and was ultimately acquired under tough terms. Perhaps that moment inspired you to better understand the dynamics of strategic transactions and become part of that decision-making process. Perhaps that’s what’s leading you to pursue an MBA at Kellogg.
Connect the Past to the Future
In Part II, you’re explicitly asked to connect the present to the future. But don’t just consider your future; think about the future of those around you. The Kellogg admissions committee is not only assessing your fit for the program; they are assessing what you will add to the experience of the 500-plus students who will learn, and then graduate, alongside you. What will your peers learn from you that they cannot find elsewhere in the room? Connect your unique industry knowledge, your cultural perspective, the way you approach conflict or collaboration, to how you will show up for your MBA, both in and beyond the classroom. Build out an image of the future in which you might engage with and enrich your peers’ experience, and leave a lasting impact.
Know Thyself
The best Kellogg MBA essays are grounded, specific, and generous in spirit. They show a candidate who has genuinely thought about the community they are joining, and has something real to bring to it. It’s your chance to articulate the “whys” behind your goals, and show that your decision to pursue an MBA is part of a larger, intentional journey.

Key Tips for how to Answer the required Kellogg MBA Application Essay
- Identify the pivotal moments. Kellogg wants the experiences that genuinely changed your direction or helped you realize your purpose. Consider how your past connects to your present (Part I), and how your present connects to your future (Part II).
- Make the timing feel earned. Why Kellogg? Why now? Show that now is the right moment through self-awareness and honest reflection, not just progression.
- Be specific. Broad claims about ambition or leadership are far less effective than a well-chosen story told with honesty and precision.
- Lean into generosity. What can others learn from you? How will you contribute? Be clear and grounded about what you hope to add to the campus and community.
Judith Silverman Hodara, Fortuna Co-Founder and former Wharton Admissions Head advises: “The essays that land are the ones where I can feel the logic of the journey. If a candidate can articulate, credibly and specifically, how they worked in X, and because of what happened there, they became interested in Y, and now they understand they need Z to get where they are going. That kind of clarity is hard to fake, and when it is genuine, it reads beautifully.”
How to Answer Kellogg’s Optional Essay
Prompt: We know that life is full of extenuating circumstances. Whether you want to explain gaps in work experience, your choice of recommenders, inconsistent or questionable academic performance or something else, you can use this section to briefly tell us anything we need to know about your application. (250 words, hard cut-off at 280)
Kellogg’s optional essay is exactly that: optional. It is most valuable when there is a genuine gap, inconsistency, or unusual circumstance to address. It is not a space to squeeze in another accomplishment. If your application tells a clean, complete story on its own, there is no need to use this section.
Our advice:
- Be deliberate. Employment gaps, a low GPA, a disciplinary matter, or an unconventional recommender choice are all appropriate subjects. The goal is to help the admissions committee evaluate your application fairly, with full context.
- Keep the tone measured and forward-looking. Acknowledge the situation briefly and factually, take responsibility where appropriate, and focus on what you learned or how you have grown since. Admissions readers respond well to maturity and self-awareness.
- Resist the urge to expand. This section should not introduce new stories or accomplishments. If the information belongs in your main essay, it belongs there.
- Be brief. The 280-word limit is a ceiling, not a target. A tight, well-reasoned response is more effective than a long one.
Key takeaway: Treat this section as a service to the admissions reader. Give them what they need to understand your file fully, and trust the rest of your application to speak for itself.
Caroline Diarte Edwards, Fortuna Co-Founder and former INSEAD Admissions Director comments: “The optional essay works best when it is genuinely informative. I appreciated candidates who used it to address something I would have wondered about anyway. When in doubt, less is more here.”

How to Answer the Kellogg MBA Career Goals Short Answer Questions
Kellogg asks two short-answer questions to help understand where you’re headed and why. Though brief, these responses carry weight. They set the tone and context for the rest of your application, so make every word count.
Short Answer Question 1:
“Immediately following graduation: Beyond your industry and function selections above, describe the type of role(s) and organization(s) you are targeting. (500 characters)”
In just a few lines, you need to show that you’ve seriously considered your post-MBA goals. But even a short essay is an opportunity to tell a story. Don’t just name a role; convey what draws you to it. The best responses link past experiences, current interests, and a clear sense of purpose. Show Kellogg that this path isn’t a whim; paint an authentic, intentional picture of your future self, and highlight how a Kellogg MBA is a well-informed next step grounded in who you are.
Short Answer Question 2:
“Five years post-graduation: Describe where you expect your career to have progressed by this point. We are interested in the scope of responsibility and leadership you are working toward. (500 characters)”
Here, Kellogg wants to see vision and direction. What kind of future leader do you hope Kellogg can help you become in five years – not just in title, but in scope, impact, or influence? Whether you aspire to lead a team, drive innovation, or create value in a new market, your answer should paint a picture of your broader goals. There’s no one “right” definition of success; what matters is that yours feels personal, realistic, and consistent with the story you’re telling across your application.

Kellogg MBA Video Essay: What to Expect and How to Prepare
Prompt: We’ve read your essays, we’ve read your resume – now we want you to bring all that to life in a video. Show us the person behind all those carefully crafted words. The video will be comprised of five questions, each designed to help you showcase your personality and share some of the experiences that brought you here today. Some things to keep in mind as you prepare to complete this section:
- Video essays are due 96 hours after the application deadline.
- A video essay link will appear on your Application Status Page after you submit your application and payment.
- You will need an internet-connected computer with a webcam and a microphone.
- The video should take about 30 minutes to complete, which includes time for setup.
The Kellogg MBA video essay gives the admissions committee something the written application cannot: a sense of how you communicate, how you think on your feet under mild pressure, and who you are in real time. It consists of five questions, each requiring a response of up to one minute after approximately 20 seconds of preparation. Your recordings cannot be redone, which makes thoughtful preparation essential.
