LBS MBA Application Guide
How to get into LBS with insider tips from former LBS admissions insiders.

About London Business School (LBS)
Founded in 1964 and set on the edge of Regent’s Park, London Business School is a top-flight center of teaching and research, consistently ranked among Europe’s best MBA programs. LBS is a fixture in the Financial Times global top 10 (placing #4 worldwide in 2026), and has long been viewed as the international alternative to the finance-focused schools of the US. In recent years, it has also shed its reputation as a “finance school”, as blue-chip firms compete to recruit its roughly 500 graduates every year, placing them across the UK and Europe, as well as the Middle East, the Americas, Africa, and Asia.
The LBS MBA offers rare flexibility alongside a global education in one of the world’s most active business cities, and a defining feature is choice. Students build the program around their own goals, working through a tailored core, selecting from more than 100 electives, and exiting at 15, 18, or 21 months depending on how much runway their career change requires. That structure also preserves the summer internship, a meaningful advantage for career switchers, and a feature that is not common to all European programs.
Adding to that customization is the classroom itself. Roughly 90% of each LBS class arrives from outside the UK, representing 66 nationalities in the Class of 2027. The largest single nationality holds just 16% of seats, which makes diversity a daily feature of the school’s culture. It shapes study groups, electives, clubs, and ultimately the way graduates lead throughout their careers. The insights on this page reflect Fortuna’s extensive firsthand knowledge of LBS, including perspectives from coaches who have served inside the school’s admissions and program teams.
“When I was reading files at LBS, we deliberately selected a diverse, eclectic cohort. One where profiles as diverse as a private equity investor, a biotech engineer, and a tech product manager could potentially all be working together,” says Fortuna’s Emma Bond, former Senior Manager of MBA Admissions at London Business School. “The applications that impressed made it easy to picture what each candidate would add to that room.”
Why Choose London Business School (LBS)?
LBS attracts a particular kind of MBA candidate: experienced professionals who want an international education without sacrificing the time and internship that a real career change might often require.
Fortuna Director Emma Bond served as Senior Manager of MBA Admissions at London Business School, where she was a core member of the committee responsible for full-time MBA admissions and the program’s scholarship portfolio. Poets&Quants has ranked her the #1 MBA admissions consultant in the world. She is also joined by Karen Ponte, a former Senior Program Manager at LBS who ran key curriculum areas including the International Exchange Program and the Summer Consulting Program, and by Senior Expert Coach Cassandra Pittman, a Columbia MBA who served on the admissions teams at both LBS and INSEAD. Together, they offer applicants an exceptional level of firsthand insight into what LBS looks for and how successful candidates stand out.
From their experience, here are a few things that distinguish LBS from every other top program:
The London advantage. The school sits in the middle of one of the world’s most active business ecosystems. Recruiters, guest speakers, and live company projects are on the doorstep rather than a flight away, and the LondonCAP course turns the city itself into a working classroom.
Flexibility by design. The 15–21-month structure includes flexible exit points, a tailored core, and more than 100 electives. Students design the program around their goals, whether that means a summer internship, an international exchange, or a faster return to the market. LBS also offers a separate One-Year MBA for professionals who hold a master’s in management and want to accelerate further.
A truly global classroom. The LBS MBA class size sits at around 500 and roughly 90% of students come from outside the UK, spanning ~66 nationalities with no single nationality dominating. Study groups are deliberately mixed, and much of the learning comes from making decisions alongside people whose assumptions differ from your own.
Recruiting reach that few programs can match. More than 1,480 employers partner with LBS, and over 2,000 MBA job opportunities were advertised through the school in 2024–25. Nearly every member of the Class of 2025 (97%) engaged with the LBS Career Centre.
Built for founders, not just career switchers. The Entrepreneurship Summer School, the LBS Incubator, and The Entrepreneurship Lab support founders from idea to launch, and 21 members of the Class of 2025 started their own ventures straight out of the program.
“Storytelling is absolutely essential in the LBS application,” says Fortuna Senior Expert Coach Cassandra Pittman, a former member of the admissions teams at both London Business School and INSEAD. “The pieces of your biography that reveal what shaped you and how you think are exactly what a file reader remembers at the end of a long day, and those touchstones are what get you in.”

Curriculum Highlights
The LBS MBA curriculum pairs a structured first year with one of the most customizable second acts in graduate management education, all delivered from a single campus in central London.
Core Curriculum (Year One): Three terms, running from August to June, build your foundation in finance, strategy, marketing, economics, organizational behavior, and data analytics. A tailored core lets you adjust several requirements to fit your unique background and goals, while leadership development work (including the Global Leadership Assessment for Managers) begins before the first term.
Electives and Flexible Exit (Year Two): You choose from more than 100 electives, pursue an international exchange at one of 30+ partner schools, and decide for yourself when to leave. Exit points at 15, 18, or 21 months allow you to match the program’s length to your unique career plan, and tuition covers the full program regardless of the exit point.
The London Experience: Through LondonCAP, you and your classmates embed with London-based organizations on live business challenges, applying classroom frameworks to real decisions in real time.
Global Involvement: Week-long immersion courses take students to markets as varied as Brazil, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa, where they meet business leaders on the ground and complete a project. Several of these hugely popular experiences now carry a sustainability focus: the Singapore course examines sustainability in the global value chain, Stockholm’s theme is sustainability, and the Kathmandu experience is devoted entirely to social impact.
Sustainability and Digital Innovation: LBS continues to refresh its curriculum in line with where business is heading. A full Sustainability Concentration, launched in 2023, equips students to excel in corporate sustainability strategy, sustainability leadership, ESG investing, sustainability consulting, and international development. Meanwhile, the elective portfolio has expanded into AI, analytics, and digital disruption with courses such as Data Science for Business, Digital Marketing, Business Resilience, Digital Deep Dive, and Systematic Inventive Thinking.
Entrepreneurship: The Entrepreneurship Summer School, the LBS Incubator, and elective courses such as The Entrepreneurship Lab offer structure, mentorship, and direct access to London’s venture ecosystem.

LBS Admissions Process & How To Get Into the LBS MBA Program
Below is our guidance on each stage of the LBS MBA admissions process, in the order our successful clients typically complete them.
For tailored, start-to-finish support from our team of former admissions insiders, explore Fortuna’s All-Inclusive MBA Package.
A note on timing: LBS MBA application deadlines run across three application rounds for the flagship MBA. Round 1 opens in early September (September 3 for the current cycle); subsequent rounds fall in January and March. Deadlines are at 5pm UK time, with decisions emailed on published dates.
1. CV
LBS asks for a one-page CV (resume), and they place a lot of emphasis on one page. The goal is deliberate focus, where every line has to earn its place through scope, leadership, and measurable impact. As you might imagine, this leaves no room for filler. The school also asks that significant gaps in your employment history be explained on a separate sheet, so it’s best practice to address them directly.
Overrepresented profiles face a higher bar by default. Consultants make up 29% of the Class of 2027 and finance professionals another 25%, so if you come from either background, your CV needs to surface what is distinctive within it: the market you opened, the team you rebuilt, the result a client would still mention. Applicants from less conventional paths (medicine, professional sport, the military, the public sector) regularly earn seats at LBS, but they need to pair a compelling rationale for the MBA with clear evidence they can handle the quantitative core.
2. References
LBS asks for a single professional reference, ideally from your current or a former supervisor. If approaching your employer is not an option, a senior colleague or long-standing client who knows your work well is acceptable. References are submitted through the school’s online system, and LBS does not accept pre-written or general letters.
One reference means one voice carries the entire outside view of your candidacy, so choose depth over title. A specific, story-rich reference from someone who has watched you lead will always beat a polite paragraph from the most senior name in your network. Brief your referee on your goals and the examples that matter, then give them time to write something real.
3. LBS MBA Essays
The LBS application includes two required essays, an optional essay, and a short additional essay for re-applicants. The LBS MBA essay questions are submitted via a text box in the application portal rather than a separate document, and word counts are now enforced via strict character limits. The very best answers give the Admissions Committee context into what has motivated your post-MBA career goals and whose lives will be different (and how) if you succeed. LBS reads for clarity of direction, self-awareness, and evidence that you will enrich the classroom.
Essay 1: What are your post-MBA goals and how will your prior experience and the London Business School programme contribute towards these? (3,000 characters maximum, approximately 500 words)
Essay 2: What makes you unique? (3,000 characters maximum, approximately 500 words)
Optional Essay (3,000 characters maximum): Is there any other information you believe the Admissions Committee should know about you and your application to London Business School?
Re-Applicant Essay (3,000 characters maximum): If you have previously applied for an MBA programme with London Business School, how have you strengthened your candidacy since you last applied? Please comment on how you have grown personally and professionally.
AI Disclosure: LBS now requires candidates to reference any use of AI software in completing the essay questions, including the specific tool used and any relevant prompts or questions. This field appears in the application directly below the essay questions.

4. Kira Video Assessment
LBS does not publish details about its video component, but Fortuna’s experience across many client cycles gives a consistent picture. Candidates invited to interview typically receive a Kira Talent link and around 10–14 days to complete two recorded questions. The first is set in advance and identical for every candidate: “What will you gain from the London Business School MBA Programme that you won’t gain from another MBA programme?” You have 90 seconds to record your answer. The second question is drawn at random from a large pool, with 45 seconds to prepare and 90 seconds to respond.
The nice thing about this first question is that it’s known and answerable in advance. Often, it also maps directly onto the research you did for Essay 1. With that, the goal is to rehearse until your 90 seconds are specific, natural, and unmistakably about LBS. For the random question, practice thinking aloud in short, structured bursts, but most of all, be honest and earnest.

5. Alumni Interview
LBS interviews are conducted by trained alumni, usually based in your region, either in person or online. The tone is professional and conversational, but the format has a distinctive LBS twist: most interviews include a short impromptu exercise in which your interviewer assigns a topic on the spot, gives you a few minutes to gather your thoughts, and asks you to present briefly. Consider it a low-stakes simulation of the LBS classroom, where thinking on your feet in front of peers is a weekly occurrence.
Your goal should be to prepare substantive examples of leadership, teamwork, and cross-cultural judgment, and be ready to discuss your goals with the same clarity as your essays. Interview length and style vary with the interviewer, so hold your structure loosely and treat the conversation as a professional exchange with someone who genuinely wants to understand your candidacy.

Expert Application Advice from Fortuna Coaches
Meet the veteran admissions insiders who will guide your LBS journey: Explore Fortuna’s dream team.
The tips below draw on the application advice of Fortuna Director Emma Bond, a former senior member of the LBS Admissions Committee.
1. Convey Your Passion for LBS with Evidence
In a pool this competitive, the admissions office is constantly looking for proof of your commitment to the school. If at all possible, visit before you apply: LBS runs monthly information sessions, weekly drop-in sessions, and opportunities to sit in on a class, and the application form gives you space to record your visit. Time with current students and staff helps you decide whether the school is truly right for you, and a conversation with someone on the admissions team can put you on their radar as a serious candidate. If you cannot get to London, LBS holds information sessions in cities around the world each year.
Specificity is the ultimate goal here, in person and on paper alike: which exit point, which electives, which clubs, and why now.
“The most common mistake I see is applicants spending precious words telling LBS about LBS. The committee already knows what the school offers,” says Fortuna’s Karen Ponte, former Senior Program Manager at London Business School. “What they need to hear is why you fit, how the program meets your specific goals, and what you would do with all that flexibility. You have limited words, so make every one of them about you, your story, and your unique fit.”
2. International Identity and Community Contribution Are Two Sides of the Same Coin.
LBS sits in a supremely multicultural city, and you’ll see that in the classrooms. Less than 10% of students are British, and no single nationality holds more than 16% of seats. Internationalism is woven through the curriculum and culture at LBS, with Global Experience immersions now part of the core MBA offering. As a result, the committee scrutinizes applications for the specific global perspective a candidate brings, and that can take many forms: international clients and projects, multicultural teams, languages learned, or a global secondment on the horizon.
This same principle also applies to how you’ll contribute on campus. LBS students are famously active in clubs, sports, and community life, and the school’s smaller class size reinforces a collegial atmosphere where students actively support one another. Admissions looks for candidates who will lead these activities and keep contributing as alumni. So, try to think beyond club sign-ups: what experience and skill set can you offer your classmates, and where will you show up for them?
“A default response in applications is mentioning having vacationed or backpacked across Europe, but serious LBS applicants, your competition, will have very likely worked, lived, and traveled on multiple continents,” says Emma Bond. “If the international side of LBS is what drew you to the school in the first place, sell that side of yourself. And if you’re planning to apply in a year or two and haven’t traveled much yet, there’s no better time than the present.”
3. Academics Get a Whole-Person Review, So Manage the Numbers Strategically.
LBS wants candidates who can cope with rigorous coursework, and it is fairly transparent about benchmarks. The LBS MBA average GMAT sits around 645 on the GMAT Focus scale, with a typical range of 555 to 805 and a floor around 555, while GRE candidates should target 160 or higher in each section. But the school prides itself on a diverse, well-rounded class, and the committee weighs the whole person (work experience, essays, references) rather than the key numbers alone.
If your GPA sits below average, prepare especially well for the GMAT; the score you submit becomes that much more significant in the final decision and can offset the risk presented by lower grades. The application form asks directly whether your academic record reflects your potential, so use that question for context, and point to other evidence of analytical ability, from professional qualifications to quantitative work experience.
4. Overrepresented or Wild Card, Know Your Lane.
Each year the bulk of the class arrives from finance, consulting, and the corporate sector; consultants alone made up 29% of the incoming Class of 2027, with another 25% from finance, so candidates from those backgrounds compete hardest against people who look like them on paper. The differentiator is specificity: the exact problem you solved, the geography you know that others do not, and the results a client would name if asked about your work. Just as important, write like a person. A consultant who writes like a consulting deliverable disappears into the pile, while the candidate who is specific, honest, and even a little unguarded gets remembered.
At the same time, LBS loves to celebrate the eclectic nature of its community. Every class includes students transitioning from less traditional areas like medicine, teaching, and increasingly the military, and now and then the committee will take a chance on a true wild card. If you are an outlier in one part of your application, the rest of it (test score, essays, reference) needs to be absolutely stellar. The same openness applies to your destination as well as your origin: LBS long ago outgrew its finance-school reputation, with a stable pipeline in and out of firms like BCG and McKinsey and tech recruiters like Amazon and Google increasingly visible on campus, so less traditional career goals are welcome provided you stay realistic and connect the transferable skills.
5. Show How You Will Contribute, on Campus and as an Alum.
LBS students are famously active in clubs, sports, and community life, and the school enjoys a collegial atmosphere that its smaller class size reinforces; students actively support one another through weaker coursework elements. Admissions looks for candidates who will lead these activities enthusiastically and keep contributing as alumni, so you need to have demonstrated similar energy and dedication outside your professional life. Think about value-add on a deeper level than club sign-ups: what experience and skill set can you offer your classmates, and where will you show up for them?
“Fit is something you get a feel for across the whole of an individual’s profile. If you have a genuine curiosity about other ways of doing business; you actively seek out people unlike yourself and you have a plan that actually uses what LBS uniquely offers, you will stand out immediately.” says Karen Ponte.
6. Timing Matters, but Not as Much as a Strong Application.
LBS runs three application rounds, with Round 1 opening in early September. Unlike some top US programs that explicitly favor early applicants, LBS reads all three rounds seriously and fills the class from strong candidates across the calendar. That said, there are practical reasons to apply as early as your application allows. For one, LBS MBA scholarships are awarded at the point of admission, so earlier rounds give you more runway for funding. International applicants also benefit from the additional time for visa processing. Round 3 remains a viable path for outstanding candidates, particularly those who come to the MBA decision late in the year, however candidates from over-represented pools should still try and hit the earlier rounds if possible. Nevertheless, the most important thing is to apply when your application is at its strongest.
For guidance on timing, read our article: Round 1, Round 2 or Round 3? What MBA Applicants Need to Know.
