NYU Stern MBA Application Guide

About NYU Stern

New York University Stern School of Business (NYU Stern) defines itself as a school built for change – attracting candidates who are eager to navigate, shape, and lead transformation in business and society. Located in the heart of New York City’s Greenwich Village, Stern offers unparalleled access to global industries, from finance on Wall Street to technology in Silicon Alley, as well as media, entertainment, luxury, and fashion.

Stern’s approach to management education reflects this dynamic environment. The MBA program emphasizes experiential learning and real-world engagement, with students regularly working alongside companies and leaders across New York’s business ecosystem. Recent innovations – including the Tech MBA and the Change Studio – highlight Stern’s focus on preparing students to understand and drive change in complex, fast-moving industries.

A defining element of Stern’s culture is its emphasis on being “radically responsible,” grounded in the belief that business can be a force for positive impact. This ethos is reinforced through the school’s focus on EQ (emotional intelligence), collaboration, and leadership development, shaping graduates who are both analytically strong and self-aware.

Founded in 1900, NYU Stern combines a long-standing reputation in finance with a forward-looking, interdisciplinary approach. The result is an MBA experience that blends academic rigor with direct access to one of the world’s most influential business hubs – preparing graduates for leadership roles across industries and around the globe.

The insights on this page reflect Fortuna’s deep, on-the-ground knowledge of NYU Stern, including perspectives from our MBA admissions coaches who have guided applicants to successful outcomes at the school.

NYU Stern Admissions Process & How To Get Into the Stern MBA Program

Stern values bold thinkers who embrace change, lead with purpose, and bring a human-centered mindset to business. As you approach each component of the application, reflect on the core story you want to tell and how you’ll shape the Stern community as much as you’ll grow from it.

Below is our guidance on each stage of the NYU Stern MBA admissions process, in the order our successful clients typically complete them, followed by links to our “best of” articles.

For tailored, start-to-finish support from our team of former admissions insiders, explore Fortuna’s All-Inclusive MBA Package.

1. Resume

Stern looks for evidence of impact, progression, and collaboration. Your resume should highlight leadership, teamwork, and results – not just responsibilities. Quantify outcomes where possible, but also demonstrate how you influence others and contribute to team success. Stern values community engagement and extracurricular involvement, so include activities that reflect your interests and leadership outside of work.

2. EQ Endorsement (Recommendations)

As mentioned, Stern requires an EQ Endorsement in lieu of traditional recommendation letters, reflecting its core value of IQ + EQ. Applicants must submit one endorsement (from a current supervisor if possible), with an optional second.

Endorsers are asked to evaluate your performance, provide constructive feedback examples, and – critically – share a specific example of your emotional intelligence. Choose champions who know your work well and can speak concretely about how you collaborate, lead, and respond to feedback. Specific, behavior-based examples of EQ will carry the most weight, such as resolving conflict, mentoring others, or navigating ambiguity.

3. NYU Stern MBA Essays

NYU MBA essays are distinctive, combining traditional career goals with a creative component that reflects the school’s emphasis on individuality and self-expression. NYU Stern MBA admissions isn’t just assessing what you’ve achieved – they want to understand how you think, what drives you, and how you’ll contribute to the energy and ethos of their community. Current prompts include a short answer question on career goals and two required essays:

Short Answer: Professional Aspirations (150 words)

What are your short-term career goals?

With just 150 words, this is not the place for storytelling – it’s a space for precision and clarity. The Stern admissions committee wants to see that you have a well-researched, realistic plan that builds on your past experience and aligns with what Stern can help you achieve. In other words, your short-term goal should be specific, feasible, and MBA-recruiting-ready.

Essay 1 : Change: _____ it. (350 word max)

In today’s global business environment, the only constant is change. Using NYU Stern’s brand call to action, we want to know how you view change. Change: _____ it. Fill in the blank with a word of your choice. Why does this word resonate with you? How will you embrace your own personal tagline while at Stern? Examples:

Change: Dare it.

Change: Dream it.

Change: Drive it.

Change: Empower it.

Change: Manifest it.

Change: [Any word of your choice.]

This NYU Stern essay is where your savvy understanding of context counts. This unique prompt asks you to distill your relationship with change into a single word – then bring that word to life through a personal lens in terms of how you respond and lead. It’s part reflection, part branding exercise, and part call to action. Your chosen word should not only capture how you think about change, but also reflect your values, leadership style, and vision for your time at Stern. Your response should be personal, distinctive, and action-oriented. This is your moment to show Stern who you are and how you lead in a world of constant transformation.

Essay 2: Personal Expression (a.k.a. “Pick Six”)
Describe yourself to the Admissions Committee and to your future classmates using six images and corresponding captions.

The “Pick Six” is classic Stern – creative, personal, and completely unique among MBA applications. If Essay 1 gives the admissions committee insight into what you do, this prompt reveals who you are. It’s an invitation to show your personality, values, quirks, and motivations in a multidimensional way, beyond your resume and transcripts. Authenticity and thoughtful curation matter more than creativity for its own sake.

You’ll submit a single PDF with six images, each accompanied by a one-sentence caption, along with a short (max 3-sentence) intro. Photos, infographics, artwork, or even symbolic imagery are all fair game. The key isn’t visual polish – it’s intentionality. Every image should say something meaningful about what makes you you and how you’ll show up at Stern.

Additional Information (Optional, up to 500 words)

Use this space to explain gaps, weaknesses, or additional context. Offer straightforward explanations and not excuses. The key is to be honest, brief, and constructive.

4. Online Application

Don’t overlook Stern’s short-answer fields. These sections help the admissions committee understand your background, career direction, and motivations.

Be concise and intentional – clearly articulate your career interests, how you developed them, and what you still need to learn. Avoid repeating your resume or essays; instead, use these responses to connect the dots in your story and reinforce your clarity of purpose.

5. Interview

Interviews are by invitation only and typically conducted by admissions staff who have read your entire application. Expect a behavioral, conversational format focused on your experiences, leadership style, and fit with Stern’s collaborative culture.

Be prepared to discuss your career goals, walk through key experiences, and demonstrate strong communication skills. Stern places particular emphasis on how you work with others, so expect questions that probe teamwork, leadership, and self-awareness. As noted, Stern stands out for explicitly evaluating candidates’ emotional intelligence when assessing leadership potential.

Expert Application Advice from Fortuna Coaches

1. Demonstrate both IQ and EQ

Stern evaluates candidates holistically, placing equal weight on intellectual ability and interpersonal strengths. Strong academics and test scores are important, but you must also show how you collaborate, lead teams, and contribute to a community. Use your essays, recommendations, and interview to demonstrate your leadership style, communication skills, and emotional intelligence.

“At Stern, intellect is essential, but EQ is what sets you apart in a sea of academic excellence,” says Fortuna’s Trisha Nussbaum, an NYU Stern alumna with a background in tech consulting and talent development at IBM and Google. “Choose a recommender who knows you well and can advocate for who you are, not just what you’ve achieved. Substance and specificity matter far more than title.”

2. Show clear career direction, but keep it grounded

Stern expects applicants to have a well-researched sense of their post-MBA goals. You don’t need absolute certainty, but you should be able to articulate a clear direction, explain how your past experiences led you there, and demonstrate what you still need to learn. Candidates who show both focus and flexibility tend to resonate most.

“The most compelling applicants aren’t necessarily those with the most prestigious backgrounds; they’re the ones who can tell a clear, coherent story about where they’ve been and where they’re going,” says Fortuna’s Trisha Nussbaum. “Stern is investing in candidates with direction, not just ambition. You don’t need a rigid plan, but your goals should be grounded in real self-reflection and aligned with how you want to grow through the Stern experience.”

3. Do your homework on Stern

It is immediately clear to the admissions committee when candidates have not taken the time to understand the program. Be specific about why Stern is the right fit – whether it’s academic offerings, clubs, industry access, or culture. Engage with students, attend events, and incorporate relevant insights into your application.

4. Highlight what makes your background distinctive

Stern values diversity across industries and experiences. Whether you come from a traditional or non-traditional background, focus on what you bring to the classroom and how your perspective will add value. Show how your experiences will contribute to discussions, teamwork, and the broader community.

5. Show how you will engage beyond the classroom

Stern places strong emphasis on student involvement. Demonstrate how you plan to engage in clubs, leadership roles, and campus life. The admissions committee is looking for candidates who will actively contribute to the community – not just academically, but socially and professionally.

“One of the things I loved most about Stern was that the community didn’t end when class was over – it extended into every club meeting, panel, and late night working on team projects,” says Trisha Nussbaum. “The admissions committee is looking to cultivate this, and they’re selecting for people who will add to that energy. If your application doesn’t show how you’ll contribute beyond academics, you’re missing one of Stern’s most important signals of fit.”

6. Address weaknesses proactively

If you have gaps in your academic or quantitative background, take steps to strengthen your profile before applying – through coursework, certifications, or analytical projects at work. Stern evaluates candidates holistically, so demonstrating growth and initiative can help offset weaker areas.
