Chicago Booth
MBA Application Guide

About Chicago Booth

Chicago Booth is one of the world’s most intellectually rigorous business schools, known for shaping how modern business and economics are understood and practiced. As the second-oldest business school in the United States, Booth has pioneered several defining innovations in management education, including the first PhD program in business, the first Executive MBA, and the first required MBA leadership course. It is also the only school to have trademarked its educational philosophy – the Chicago Approach – a model grounded in empirical analysis, disciplined inquiry, and the belief that data, not precedent, should guide decision-making.

Booth’s culture is distinctive and intentionally so. As part of a university with a deep research identity, the school cultivates students who question assumptions, challenge conventional wisdom, and thrive in environments that demand intellectual independence. The admissions committee looks for candidates who enjoy tackling complex problems, digging beneath surface-level answers, and taking initiative in ambiguous situations.

The MBA curriculum is one of the most flexible among top programs, with only a single required course. Booth assumes you know what you need from your MBA — and empowers you to build it. Students craft individualized programs of study aligned with their experience and aspirations, choosing courses that challenge them, broaden their thinking, and prepare them for the business landscape they want to lead.

Chicago Booth is an ideal fit for candidates who are self-directed, analytically curious, and eager to be pushed by the ideas, research, and debates shaping the future of business.

Why Choose Chicago Booth?

Chicago Booth is defined by an intellectual culture that prizes inquiry, independence of thought, and evidence-based decision-making. Students who thrive here aren’t satisfied with surface answers – they test assumptions, challenge frameworks, and learn to build arguments grounded in rigorous analysis. This mindset reflects Booth’s home within the University of Chicago, a research powerhouse whose faculty and alumni have shaped modern finance, economics, behavioral science, and business practice.

Freedom to design your education. With only one required course, the curriculum empowers you to build a sequence of classes that aligns with your goals and prior experience – whether you’re deepening your technical fluency, branching into new disciplines, or preparing for a strategic pivot. Students consistently describe this flexibility as one of the school’s greatest advantages.

Collaborative culture that transcends old stereotypes. The new facilities, grade non-disclosure policy, and emphasis on teamwork have fostered a supportive environment where students push one another intellectually while forming strong personal and professional relationships. You’ll learn alongside peers who are serious about ideas but equally committed to contributing, sharing, and elevating the conversation.

Build community far beyond the classroom. Student-led groups, lab courses, and the renowned New Venture Challenge create pathways to apply your learning in real time. Whether you are running experiments, modeling markets, or testing entrepreneurial ideas, you’ll find a community that encourages you to explore widely and lead boldly.

Chicago Booth Admissions Process & How To Get Into the Booth MBA Program

Fortuna brings unmatched expertise on Chicago Booth, powered by a team of former gatekeepers and graduates. Below is our guidance on each stage of the Chicago Booth application, moving in order from start to finish.

1. Resume

Chicago Booth MBA admissions looks for the same fundamentals as other top programs – leadership, intellectual rigor, and sustained impact –but with a distinctive emphasis on analytical thinking, independent judgment, and clarity of purpose. Your resume should convey a coherent story of how you’ve challenged assumptions, taken ownership of complex problems, and driven results, not simply roles you’ve held.

Strong Booth applicants typically demonstrate progression and depth, whether through accelerated responsibility, cross-functional influence, or increasing scope of impact. Each bullet should highlight outcomes, not tasks – quantifying results wherever possible and clearly explaining the “why” behind your actions. Booth also values contributions beyond the workplace – from civic engagement to intellectual pursuits – especially when they reveal collaboration, curiosity, or leadership outside formal authority. For tactical guidance, see Fortuna’s expert MBA Resume Tips by Fortuna’s Jody Keating.

2. Recommendations

Letters of recommendation play a central role in Booth’s holistic review, offering the admissions committee a window into how you perform, lead, and grow in professional settings. Booth requires two recommendations, with one ideally coming from your current supervisor, who can speak directly to your day-to-day impact and trajectory. Recommenders respond to two open-ended prompts: (1) how your performance, potential, and personal qualities compare with those of other well-qualified candidates in similar roles – supported by specific examples; and (2) the most meaningful piece of constructive feedback they have given you, including the context and how you responded. Booth suggests keeping each response within 500–750 words (no more than ~1,500 words total).

In the online application, you’ll also be asked why you selected these recommenders, giving you a chance to highlight the distinct perspectives each one contributes. Booth values substance over status – the strongest recommendations come from people who know your work deeply and can offer concrete, recent evidence of your analytical ability, leadership, collaboration, and professional maturity. Thoughtfully chosen recommenders who can articulate these qualities with specificity will significantly strengthen your overall application narrative.

3. Booth MBA Essays

Booth has two required essays – one focused on your career goals and one that asks you to reflect on your personal values through a photo-based prompt. These essays are your opportunity to go beyond your resume and test scores to show who you are, what drives you, and how you’ll contribute to Booth’s collaborative and intellectually curious community.

Standout essays demonstrate self-awareness, clarity of purpose, and a genuine fit with Booth’s culture. This means being honest about your goals, reflective about your values, and specific about what makes Booth the right place for your growth.

For a breakdown of each essay prompt with strategies and guidance on how to craft your response, view the article by Fortuna’s Bill Kooser: Chicago Booth MBA Essays: Strategy & Tips.

4. Online Application

Don’t overthink – or underthink – this section. Skip high school achievements (best to keep things focused on college or later), but don’t neglect to include relevant awards, like receiving a firm-wide honor. In addition to your MBA essay, Booth asks two short-answer questions in the application form:

  • Immediate post-MBA goal: (250 characters max)
  • Long-term post-MBA goal: (250 characters max)

Your Booth MBA application form response should expand on your required essay response – not repeat it. Use this longer format to go beyond the “what” and explore the “why” (we recommend 500–650 words). There’s also an Optional Question in Additional Information in the form inviting you to clarify any information that needs further explanation (300 words max). Use this wisely: If there’s something genuinely ambiguous or potentially concerning to address, this is your opportunity. It is not extra space to squeeze in another essay – and definitely not a place to repeat content from elsewhere (view our related article on the Chicago Booth essays for a deeper dive).

5. Interview

Chicago Booth interviews are conducted blind, meaning your interviewer will have only reviewed your resume. (Note that your pre-interview video won’t be shared with your interviewer.) This allows for conversation to flow more organically as you and the interviewer get to know one another. Booth taps its extensive network of current students and alumni to conduct admissions interviews throughout the year, signaling that the school values the perspective its alumni can bring. You’ll also want to come prepared with thoughtful questions. The purpose of the interview is to establish a connection with the person across the table, and convince them of why you are a good “fit” with Chicago Booth.

A unique feature of the Booth interview is its pre-interview video component, which asks interview candidates to submit a 60-second video supporting their candidacy. This component allows admissions gatekeepers who don’t meet you in person to glean a direct and personal impression of who you are. The prompts are personal and designed to get to know you better; Booth encourages you to have fun with them. However, it’s another step to keep in mind as you prepare for your interview.

Expert Application Advice from Fortuna Coaches

Meet the veteran admissions insiders who will guide your Chicago Booth journey – explore Fortuna’s dream team.

1. Be Strategic About Timing

Booth’s three rounds are genuinely viable, but your goal is to apply when your profile is strongest. Round 2 is as competitive as Round 1, and Booth uses the waitlist thoughtfully – so choose the round that allows you to showcase promotions, impactful achievements, or stronger recommender evidence. The reality is that there are very few places left by Round 3, but even then, the admissions committee recognizes that there will be a handful of strong candidates applying in the final round for whom places will be available. But the numbers game works against most candidates at this stage, so plan ahead and shoot for September or January to maximize your chances.

2. Showcase What Makes You Distinct

Booth sees many candidates from consulting, finance, and engineering. Whether you come from a typical background or a nontraditional one, highlight what differentiates you – the context you’ve operated in, the perspective you bring, and the experiences that will enrich classroom discussion.

3. Demonstrate Breadth, Not Just Depth

Booth doesn’t want to be seen as “just the econ school,” and neither should you. Show that you’ve explored the school’s full academic offering and that you value a well-rounded MBA experience beyond your primary concentration. The Booth MBA is a transformative experience; through your application, demonstrate to the admissions team that you have a plan, but that you are open to the possibilities and avenues that a Chicago MBA will provide.

4. Prepare for a Person-Led Interview

Your interviewer – often an alum or student – evaluates both fit and personality. Avoid narrating your resume; instead, use the conversation to bring forward stories, motivations, and dimensions of your profile that the written application cannot fully capture. The purpose of the interview is to establish a connection with the person across the table, and convince them of why you are a good fit with Booth and its community.

5. Address Quant Concerns Proactively

Strong analytical readiness remains important. If your test score isn’t ideal, demonstrate intellectual capability through quant-heavy coursework, professional examples, recommendations, or credentials like the CFA — and show self-awareness and initiative in strengthening your profile.
