INSEAD’s number one spot in the Financial Times’ ranking has been a long time coming. In the 18 years that this ranking has been published, the top spot has been held only by Harvard, Stanford, Wharton and London Business School. So what is INSEAD doing so well?
The news that INSEAD has claimed the #1 spot in the FT Global MBA rankings will send shock waves from Boston to the Bay Area. This is the first time that the school has topped the FT ranking which Harvard, LBS, Wharton and Stanford have dominated since Della Bradshaw and her team first published in 1999. But the 2016 result is likely to generate more agitation than others, challenging as it does the dominance of ‘HSW’ dominance of the two-year program.
A little more than 900 of the round one MBA applicants to Harvard have been invited for interview. And with Stanford and Wharton reaching out to applicants, it’s the first reality check for many applicants about their chances of securing their place at a top business school for next year.
The annual Ranking of the MBA Rankings, which combines the results of all the rankings of the last 12 months by regions of the world, shows that once again the top places are held by seven business schools, the legendary M7.
For many MBA applicants, this is the last realistic shot at securing a place in the class starting next fall. At schools such as HBS, Stanford, Booth and Wharton the scarcity of places available in Round 3 means that opportunities for admission are slim. Meanwhile, competition for places at other top schools intensifies as applicants turned down in Round 1 turn their attention to other schools like Tuck, Duke, Yale, Stern, Darden, UCLA and Johnson.
Nobody likes rejection. It can make you feel hurt and wonder why you weren’t good enough. Although your spirits might be down, the bright side is that you have an opportunity to learn even more from failure, and to set yourself up for success in the future.
